A Long Post About Cabbage Patch Kids, But One With a Contest At The End!

MY CABBAGE PATCH KID

“I am a Cabbage Patch Kid

I was adopted from a cabbage.

I feel soft. I look like a baby.”

Present Professor; January 4, 1984, Mrs. Borwegan’s 2nd grade class

I could go on and on about my six Cabbage Patch Kids. . . how my mother, armed with rain checks, was ushered into the creepy back storage room of Toys R Us to snag my second born, Davey. . . the untold sums my folks spread out so that I might have Alex, bought through an “adoption broker” at the Englishtown Flea Market. . . and Nicholas, the baby, named for the Adam Rich character on Eight is Enough. . . and Elizabeth Starr, the cornsilk kid (she had cool hair), a gift to a little present professor with the unfortunate foresight to come down with mono as a 9-year-old on her summer vacation, so as not to be afflicted later in life like all her college buddies. . .

But I’ll stop there, because if you were a little girl 25 years ago, the memories should be flooding back by now, and if you were not, no amount of nostalgia will convey the glee associated with having your own Kid, complete with birth certificate, diaper, and, if you were lucky, a pacifier. Seriously, in my circle of friends, if your Cabbage Patch Kid didn’t have a pacifier, you were a social pariah.

In honor of the Kids’ 25th anniversary, Jakks Pacific has released a limited edition exact replica of the original 1983 doll. The same molds were used for the faces and shoes. The same clothes and hair styles. Names from the original Cabbage Patch database. And if you hold one up to your ear, you can hear the faint sound of Cindy Lauper’s “Time After Time.” (OK, maybe not. But give me a break. I miss the 80s. )

25th Anniversary Cabbage Patch Kid. Suggested retail price: $29.99, in stores now. Limited availability online.

Now here’s the part you’ve been waiting for:
It’s GIVEAWAY TIME! In fact, it’s our FIRST GIVEAWAY! And that giveaway is. . . wait for it. . . wait for it. . . a lifetime supply of Snausages dog treats.

No, no. Haven’t you been reading the post? It’s a Cabbage Patch Kid! A Limited Edition 25th Anniversary Cabbage Patch Kid! With a pacifier! And while all Kids have tushies stamped with the signature of Kid creator Xavier Roberts, our kid comes with the ACTUAL signature of Xavier Roberts. He signed the box! For reals!

Just leave a comment below indicating you want to be entered. You have until 11:59:59 on Sunday, September 28, to enter, after which a winner will be randomly chosen. See, a long post, but a post with a potential prize to be won–hopefully, the first of many here at Present Professor.

Good luck!

UPDATE: Congratulations to our winner, Nadia! Hope your little one enjoys the Cabbage Patch Kid.

  1. This did bring back memories of my cabbage patch kids, Alana something or other (forgot middle name but I can still picture her) and Jared Michael who I renamed on my own. I also had many a battle with my brother over the koosh (the animals, not sure if I remembered the name) that we shared. And of course the standing in line, waiting lists, fist fights at toys r us to get them!

    Love the site – congrats!

  2. This brings back memories of how my mom did not want to buy into any of that stuff. She recently bought one for my daughter…Oh what 25 years and being a grandma will do!
    Warmest regards,
    Lynel
    (Jenn and Scott’s friend)

  3. My godmother bought me my very first one, a redhead named Kimberly Sue – and I still have her. She was followed thereafter by an unreasonable number of others, including more than a few handmade ones, all with those strange little sucked-in noses. My mother has a whole photo series of me opening my first bald one. I do believe this was the first toy parents got into fist fights over – yes?

THe site is fabulous – nice work!

  4. My first Cabbage Patch was a fake. My parents either couldn’t afford or couldn’t find a real one, so Santa brought us some look-alikes. Later on I ended up with the real ones though and I loved them all just the same. I would love to have a 25th-anniversary doll to share with my daughter in a few years.

  5. Ahhh…Cabbage Patch Kids. I had a fake one that someone had handmade and then donated to my school’s silent auction fundraiser. My parents had the winning bid allowing me to take “Rebecca Ann” home. I don’t remember caring that she wasn’t a “real” CPK. A year or so later I got a preemie for Christmas, Marci Lucille. I think they’re both sitting in a box somewhere in my parents’ attic.

  6. I would love to win one of these dolls!

  7. Corinne Kendra and Darcy Kristine – I’ll never forget them!

Would love another CPKid for my daughter.

  8. Please enter me! I never had a Cabbage Patch kid when I was a child, but I really want to get one for my daughter. :)

  9. Great giveaway! I remember when it was so hard to get one of these dolls when we were kids. Now all this nostalgic stuff is making a comeback so we will be sucked in to buying it for our own kids-yep, whoever thought of that was a genius, I’ll admit, I’m a sucker! :)

  10. The year Cabbage Patch Kids were introduced, I was turning 6. My mom had EVERYBODY looking for one. Three people from various corners of the country turned them up. I got one for my birthday (Elna Adora) and two more for Christmas. From the very first CPK, we had a mission: to find one that had MY name, Susan, on its birth certificate. The search resulted in a habit I still have today – looking at the name of every Kid on the shelf. Finally, last year, at age 30, I found my Susan. She’s in the closet, still in the box, waiting for my daughter, who is three, to turn 6. Hopefully, she’ll also get one that shares HER name, but I’m not counting my eggs :)

  11. Awww. I love cabbage patch kids! I still have my original! I even remember her name “Heiki Clara” She’s from South Africa (literally) as my grandparents took a trip there that year and picked her up for me. Ahh fond memories of childhood!

  12. Oh my gosh. I still have mine. Aleene and Arleen. I did not name them. One was the astronaut. the other my mom got for me at the Speigel Outlet in Illinois.

  13. I loved cabbage patch kids too. I had a fake one my mother made me that I named Dana after my best friend, followed by my premmie named Corrine, a couple of regulars named Colleen (red haired and dressed in green), Abby (blonde hair blue eyes, Caroline my cornsilk with a 80’s outfit, and last but not least the one I picked up at a yard sale I named Elizabeth after one of the twins in Sweet Valley Twin books. In 2004 I bought my daughter who was 5 months at Christmas her first CPK since everyone kept telling me how much she looked like one and my daughters name is Kathleen (Katy) Lacy and the dolls name that she came with was Kathy Lacie. Just too bad the doll came with brown eyes instead of my daughters blue eyes. The now 4 yr old likes her miniture “patch girls” as she calls them.

  14. I’d love to win- how awesome the box is signed, too! My mom & dad went through similar struggles to get my CBK too!

    Steph

  15. Oh my goodness! My heart just skipped a beat. I still remember my first Cabbage Patch. Her name was Lena and she had brown hair like me. I took her everywhere and bought clothes for her with my allowance. I even bought handmade items for her . . .

    Good memories.

    Please enter me!!!

  16. I never had one, even though I was the right age. My sisters desperately wanted them, but my mom (bless her for having good sense!) was not about to spend what little free time she had battling other parents for a toy. She bought two very ugly plastic doll heads and made the bodies herself, and my sisters, who were a little dumb back then, loved them.

I wouldn’t mind having one now though, for the nostalgia factor. “If you’re lost you can look and you will find me, time after time…”

  17. My mom bought my first CPK, Minnie Cassandra, when I was just a baby. As I grew up, Minnie was my best friend and “security blanket”, and my mom lamented the number of times I would accidentally smack her in the mouth with the hard plastic face.

Minnie was followed by Leila, Marie, Susie, Rachel, and Rudy. (Yes, they were all girls, except for Rudy. He is a Christmas Kid, and technically he is a reindeer. Presumably a male reindeer.)

I also acquired a somewhat ridiculous amount of Cabbage Patch paraphernalia… pens, pencils, paper, folders, binders, jewelry boxes, and other fun stuff with Cabbage Patch logos.

    Ahhhh, what happy memories…

  18. I remember my parents didn’t do the whole “fight for toys” thing, so I didn’t get my own CPK until I was in HS and bought one for myself with my own money. Of course, the craze was long over then, but I had my very own preemie, complete with a tooth (wth?). My daughter fell in love with an old one with red yarn hair at a yard sale one day. I’d love another one for my younger kids.

  19. Sniffle, sniffle, I always wanted one when I was a kid but I never had one. Cabbage Patch Kids were hard to come by in the Philippines, only those lucky enough to have relatives in the US who could visit (or those who were rich enough to fly to the US themselves) had a chance. Please enter me so I can finally get one for myself, uh, I mean for my daughter! :)

  20. i am excited to learn about his website! fingers crossed for a cabbage patch kid :)

  21. Wow — CPK dolls are 25 years old? I remember my mom and I on the HUNT for a CPK for my little sister’s Christmas present on year! (Of course, my friend Allyson had a REAL CPK doll hand-signed by Xavier!) I would love to give a doll to my daughter!

    – LTV Mom

  22. Ah, I remember these well. We got our from Consumer’s Distributors in San Francisco. Talk about only one thing on our X-mas list that year! If they are 25 years old then I was in 8th grade when they came out–still were the rage even with my group then. Bet my boys would love them!

  23. I got my first Cabbage Patch Doll, Madeline Elizabeth, when I was seven. It’s hard to believe that was 25 years ago!

  24. This is the most awesome prize I’ve seen in a while. Wow! Actually signed. If we won, I think we’d add it to my daughter’s shelf of still in the box dolls – typically reserved for Disney dolls.

Thanks for hosting such a great contest! Can’t wait to keep watching your site.

  25. What a fun contest! I’d love to win a new “baby” for my daughter… and relive the CPK craze.

  51. Aww… Kids from the Cabbage Patch were always my favorite: I’d love to be entered.

  52. My daughter just found mine, (which I’m proud to say was one of the first) She loves it! But I wonder, have they solved the “bald head” look the dolls have, or do the strings still come out of a few spot on the head, making the nice little bald patches!!

  53. Thanks for entering me!

  54. Like many others, my first Cabbage Patch Kid was a fake from a gift shop in the mall. No cute belly button and no signature on the bum. :( A bit after the rush for the dolls, I ended up getting a preemie from my Aunt as a gift – Judy Audrey, I can still remember her name!

My friends and I made a bad with our Cabbage Patch kids, it was called the Benny Bunch after my friend Cheryl’s Kid named Benny. We used our Fisher Price tape recorder and recorded us playing piano, makeshift drums and singing our own songs. I still have those cassettes, so many memories, and Judy Audrey is on my closet shelf waiting to be enjoyed by my daughter once she is old enough. :)

  58. Oh my – I loved my 2 cabbage patch dolls so much when I was a kid! I had one with light brown hair in pigtails, and one with red hair in braided pigtails. My mom was a seamstress, so she made outfits for them and gave them to me for birthday and Christmas presents. I remember when I was around 7 years old, I was reading The Mini Pages (a kid’s supplement in the newspaper in the mid 80s), and it had an article about the place in Georgia where you could “adopt” a Cabbage Patch Kid and see live “births” in the Cabbage Patch. I was so fascinated with that place and always wanted to go, but never did. I really hope I win this, because it takes me back to my wonderful childhood memories.

  59. I’d love to win one for my niece! I had two cabbage patch kids growing up, both redheads (one had glasses) and their names were Netta Donna and Greta Corona. Don’t even ask me how I remember that! Very random memory of mine.

  64. Today I just found in a box of stuff my own childhood CPK. She has long red yarn hair and her name is Rachel. I gave her to my daughter to play with, but she could use a friend! Thanks!

  103. I can remember getting these for every holiday as a child and I loved it. I want to start this tradition for my daughter as well!

  104. Oh the memories. I loved those little dolls. They were the only dolls I would play with. Barbies were not for me they all lost their heads in a battle between He-man and Skelator near castle Greyskull! But when it came to these cabbage patch dolls I could not get enough. I had nine of them, one was a premie! I remember when I got the first one, she had blonde braids (yarn like). I took the braids out one day and the back of her head was bald! It scared me a little so I quickly put her hair back in to the braids! Thanks for the memory retrieval!

  105. I LOVED my Cabbage Patch Kids as a child. I would love for my daughters to grow up with the same love of these great dolls. Wonderful giveaway!

  106. OO I can remember when I got my very first one…his name was Everette. He was bald except one patch of hair about the size of a half dollar in the middle of his head. I actually would not let him go and got my pictures done with him when I was 5. My mom still has that picture hanging up on the wall. I have him still with his little pale green jump suit sittin on mine and my husbands bed…haha I must say he really hates it and he doesnt go very well with our oriental themed bedroom, but I can and will never part with him. I have to many memories, from him being my first cabbage patch doll to feeling safe with him curlded up to me when I was scared of the dark. We just had our first daughter back in May of this year, and once she is old enough I would absolutely love to give her a cabage patch doll. I even have the horse and then my other ones…little red with her pigtails (which with out them pulled up you see her bald head…lol) and her little tooth, and my boy sam with his little baseball uniform and his tongue sticking out and my other girl stephanie…she was a cornsilk hair doll, brown hair. Call me centamental all you want, but without Everette, I dont think I could be where I am today.

  107. I LOVED Cabbage Patch Kids as a little girl! My father drove around all over town looking for one when they first came out! : ) I’d love to win!

  108. Never had a Cabbage Patch doll. Thank you for this giveaway.

  112. I would like to be entered because this would be a great gift for my 3 year old daughter Emily who is in LOVE with dolls!!!
    jceko77@yahoo.com

  113. I too was given a “fake” cabbage patch kid. I will say though I loved him just the same. It would be great to win a true cabbage patch doll. I also wouldn’t mind winning the year supply of snausages. I am sure my dog would love the win!

  114. I would love to win this. It would be great for my daughter. Thanks for the chance.

  115. Oh I am sooo excited. My dad called me on the phone the other day to let me know that it was the 25th anniversary. He really remembers because he was at the store early in the morning just to hopefully win a ticket for a chance to buy one! He know only won a chance to buy one but also won the giveaway! I got to go in the back room at Millers department store and pick out my dolls and we also won a fur coat for the doll! He was interviewed on tv and I thought it was the coolest thing! I think it would be so neat to win one again because I know have a daughter, so please enter me!!!

  116. Oh, I’d love to give this to my sister. She got a CPK way back in the day. Thanks!

  117. Would love to be entered! I know my kiddos would love it!

  118. My mom stood in line at 6 am at Gaylords (no longer) for one. I was so happy at 10 yers years old, christmas ‘85. I ended up with 4, two boys and to girls. My sons, age 3 and 5, play with the boys. But this year, they both asked for their own! Of course I ran out and bought them. It wasn’t easy to find boys. Everyone was sold out. I had to order one online. And my little one is geting two-an anniversary one and a lickin’ baby. The older boy is getting the glow boy. I wouldn’t mind a new one myself.

  119. This is an excellent gift, its too bad I found about this contest too late…Great idea though…
